What is Astral Projection and How Can I Do it?

WHAT IS ASTRAL PROJECTION

Perhaps you have heard it first with Marvel’s Dr. Strange but Astral Projection is an ancient practice that spans all the way through human history, but what is astral projection? Although commonly referred to as an out-of-body experience, many people are still a little unsure as to what this practice actually is. The astral projection definition does differ slightly depending on who you ask, but the general principle of all astral projection experiences is the same. We’re going to take a look at the general notion of this mysterious practice before going on to consider the steps you can take to experience it for yourself. Let’s answer the question: what is astral projection?

What is Astral Projection?

So, what is astral projection and is astral projection real? The astral projection definition assumes the existence of the soul or spirit. It is the willful and purposeful act of your spirit or consciousness leaving your physical body behind. Reported astral projection experiences suggest that depending on your skill level, you may be limited to being in the same room as your physical body, while those who are more skilled can travel to completely different parts of the world, and possibly even beyond.

In order to more accurately define astral projection, we must understand what an out-of-body experience is. As described above, an out-of-body experience is where you leave your physical body behind, often as a spirit or awareness.

Why is important to know what is astral projection

The difference between an out-of-body experience (in a general sense) and astral projection, is that the latter is purposeful while the former can be accidental, particularly when we’re asleep.

So, what is astral projection? In simple terms, it’s a purposeful out-of-body experience. It’s common for people to astral project during moments of extreme illness or while having a near-death experience. Luckily though, this is also a skill that you can learn. It’s believed that everyone is capable of this, it just takes some knowledge and practice.

Learning to Astral Project

Is astral projection real? The only real way to know is through trying it yourself. There are so many reported cases of astral projection that it seems very unlikely to be a hoax, but if you’re able to experience it for yourself then there will be no doubt. So, how can you learn to do it?

Set and Setting

We’ve answered the question: what is astral projection? And so now that you understand the basic idea, you’re ready to begin learning how to do it. The first step, as with most spiritual practices, is creating the right atmosphere and making sure that you’re in the correct frame of mind.

The best time to try and the astral project is in the morning when you’re still in the process of waking up from your sleep. If you do it in the evening, you risk falling asleep. By being a bit tired but also fully rested, you can better allow your subconscious processes to surface.

You should also make sure that you’re alone. If you typically sleep next to a partner or have kids who might interrupt your session, be sure and find a day where you can be alone and undisturbed. Ideally, you want to be alone in the house so that you can fully allow your astral self to wander untethered.

Positioning

Lie down with your arms at your side. Whenever you feel ready, close your eyes and begin to make your motives clear. It can help to repeat a mantra such as “I’m going to astral project” or “I will leave my body”. The purpose of this is to focus your mind in a similar manner to meditation.

Start taking slow, deep breaths. Make sure each breath is comfortable. Don’t force yourself to inhale or exhale beyond what feels natural. After a few deep breaths, allow your breathing to return to normal. You should now focus on each set of muscles in your body. Starting with your feet, tense your muscles on in the inhale, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale, relaxing your muscles as you do so. Then move onto your calves, then your thighs, and so on until you reach your face. When your entire body is relaxed, you’re ready to move onto the next step.

Releasing your Astral Self

The first step to releasing your astral self and separating it from your physical body is to become aware of it. Begin to focus on a body part. Most people will start with their toes and work their way up, but there isn’t a strict order for this step. For this example, let’s assume that you’re focusing on your toes. With your eyes closed, visualize what your feet and toes look like. Then move your toes, and see them moving, but without physically moving them. They should only move within your visualization. Have patience, you might struggle to do this at first.

As your visualization spreads, you’ll begin to see more and more of your body moving, but without physically moving any part of it. Just to be clear, your physical body should remain completely still at this stage. Eventually, you’ll be able to move your entire body, but you’ll still feel as if your astral self is attached to the physical self.

Imagine that you’re trying to burst through restraints, and you should begin to feel as if part of you is vibrating. Don’t fight these vibrations, even if they feel a little strange at first. Once again, it’s important to remember that your physical body should remain completely still. As the vibrations intensify, they’ll eventually reach their peak. At this point, you should become free from your physical body and at this point, the vibrations should stop.

Astral Projecting

You’ve now successfully astral projected. You should be able to feel each part of your body, but you should also be able to look down and see yourself lying in bed. It can take a lot of practice and patience to reach this stage, so congratulations. You can return to your body at any time, or you can try exploring your own house, or maybe beyond.

Don’t allow yourself to become frustrated if you can’t travel far at first. Some people will barely be able to step away from their physical body the first few times they successfully astral project. You might find that as you try to go further, you’re suddenly returned to your body.
